Delhi or Kolkata for Heart Surgery from Bangladesh?

For complex cardiac surgery, CABG, valve replacement, paediatric congenital surgery, Delhi and Gurugram are the right destination.

Kolkata is closer and more familiar, but the gap in surgical volume and specialist depth is real.

In our experience coordinating Bangladeshi cardiac cases, patients who choose Kolkata for a straightforward procedure leave satisfied; patients who need high-risk surgery leave better served from Delhi.

If your cardiologist referred you for bypass surgery or valve repair, plan for Delhi. The extra 90 minutes of flight is worth it.

For patients from western Bangladesh, Khulna, Jessore, Rajshahi, Kolkata is the natural entry point. You can proceed to Delhi for surgery after initial diagnostics in Kolkata if your case requires it.

Flights from Bangladesh to India for Heart Patients

Dhaka to Delhi is a 2.5-hour direct flight. Dhaka to Kolkata is under 90 minutes.

Both routes have multiple daily departures with Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Air India, and IndiGo.

There are no direct flights from Dhaka to Chennai or Mumbai; both require a connection via Kolkata or Delhi.

Is it safe to fly before surgery?

Yes, for stable patients not in acute heart failure, flying to India for planned surgery is safe and routinely done.

Your cardiologist in Bangladesh will advise if any restriction applies. The flight is not the risk; delaying treatment is.

A note on the land border:

The Benapole-Petrapole crossing saves on airfare for patients going to Kolkata.

We do not recommend it for patients with active symptoms, unstable angina, or significant breathlessness.

For stable patients having an elective angiogram, it is a practical cost-saving option.

Which Heart Conditions Do Bangladeshi Patients Treat in India?

Indian Medical Visa for Bangladeshi Patients in 2026

The Indian e-MED visa is available through IVAC (Indian Visa Application Centre) offices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, and Sylhet.

The process is functioning as of mid 2026, but the events of 2024 to 2025 mean extra lead time is essential.

What happened in 2024 to 2025, and where things stand now

Following the change of government in Bangladesh in July 2024, India scaled back consular operations.

Daily visa slots fell from around 7,000 to approximately 500. Medical visa volumes dropped 30 to 40% year on year, and patients faced delays of four to eight weeks.

By mid 2026, a new Indian High Commissioner took charge in Dhaka, bilateral meetings resumed, and processing times improved.

The corridor is recovering, but is not yet at pre-2024 speed. Build 10 to 21 days from IVAC appointment to visa receipt into your planning.
