Which cancers do NexCAR19 and Qartemi CAR T treat in India?
India has 2 approved CAR T products. NexCAR19 (approved October 2023) covers B cell lymphoma and B cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B ALL) from age 15.
Qartemi (approved January 2025) covers adult B cell lymphoma.
Both target CD19, a protein on B cells, and both are made from your own T cells.
| Cancer | Indian product | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| B cell lymphoma | NexCAR19 | Age 15 and over |
| B cell lymphoma | Qartemi | Adults |
| B ALL | NexCAR19 | Age 15 and over |
| Multiple myeloma | BCMA product | Reviewed case by case |
Relapsed means the cancer returned. Refractory means it stopped responding to treatment.
CAR T is considered after chemotherapy, targeted therapy or a transplant has not controlled the disease.
- NexCAR19:26 of 38 lymphoma patients and 10 of 15 leukaemia patients responded, and none of the 53 evaluable patients had neurological side effects. A Lancet Haematology report gives 73% overall response in 51 patients.
- Qartemi: 83.3% overall response at 90 days in its phase 2 trial in adults with relapsed or refractory B cell lymphoma (AABB, January 2025).
Multiple myeloma needs a different target, BCMA, and India's approved products target CD19.
The hospital team reviews each myeloma case individually. BCMA CAR T is available through our partner hospitals in China: see our guide to CAR T hospitals in China.
Children under 15: a NexCAR19 trial in B cell leukaemia was under way at Tata Memorial in early 2024. Ask the hospital team about access.
CAR T and bone marrow transplant are often planned side by side. See our guide to bone marrow transplant hospitals in India.

Why do international patients choose India for CAR T therapy?
International patients choose CAR T cell therapy in India for three reasons: price, local manufacturing and choice of city.
- Price: the product costs about USD 50,000 to 60,000, against about USD 400,000 in the US.
- Indian made products: NexCAR19 and Qartemi are made in India, so your cells are engineered in the country where you are treated.
- Choice of city: eight hospitals across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru let you pick the city that suits your flights and budget.
What is the step by step process of CAR T cell therapy?
CAR T cell therapy in India takes seven steps, and international patients usually plan for three to six weeks in the country.

- Evaluation. A haematologist reviews your diagnosis, earlier treatment and organ function. Blood tests and scans confirm whether CAR T suits you.
- T cell collection. A machine separates T cells from your blood (apheresis). It takes a few hours and needs no surgery.
- Cell engineering. A laboratory modifies your T cells to recognise CD19 on cancer cells. This takes a few weeks.
- Chemotherapy. A short course makes room for the new cells.
- Infusion. The cells return through a drip, often in under an hour.
- Monitoring. The team watches for fever, low blood pressure and neurological symptoms for one to two weeks and treats them promptly. In NexCAR19 trials, only 5% of patients had a severe cytokine release reaction (an overactive immune response).
- Recovery. Regular blood tests and scans track your response, and your reports go to your doctor at home.
A family member usually travels with the patient, and we arrange accommodation near the hospital for both. For a week by week view of a long stay, see our bone marrow transplant abroad timeline.
